Full disclosure: It’s the Mayor & Police Chief that make these decisions, however: I would encourage whoever becomes our new mayor to make it a requirement for all police officers to walk Hoboken a minimum number of hours every week. Why? Because Hoboken is a walking town and the sight of frequent, uniformed officers acts as a deterrent for poor behavior and makes us feel safer because we are safer. Patrolling by car in a city like Hoboken isn’t necessary: the distances are short enough and too much is missed. Cars should mostly be used for emergency responses and transporting arrests and for vehicular traffic stops.
I’ve also heard from multiple Mayoral candidates (possibly all six) that they would like to bring back community policing (which just means that every neighborhood has a few assigned officers and an effort is made so that you’ll know your neighborhood officer): which I think is a great idea. We used to have this, why did we stop?
